A puffy, distended shape that suggests immediate comfort, together with spiked edges to further emphasise the inner plump. Buffa, even the name sounds pliable and absorbent, like a silencer. Its connection to Italian comic opera comes only secondary - through a certain playfulness and flippancy of form. Formally, this was about abandoning a classic sleek and angular style, and making a distinct shift towards the soft, rounded line to create a sofa that does not need to be tamed or appeased with cushions. Buffa is very a sculptural object, with an element of caprice embodied in its jestery “horns” and indulgent curves, yet also a quintessential place to wind down and catch one’s breath; round, tactile, luxurious.The entire sofa is a hypertrophy of a pillow. Considering that ours is the time of great domestication, where comfort is king and cushion its ultimate symbol, Buffa seems in line with the Zeitgeist through its eponymous “buffer” qualities. Even its hand-rest is actually a head-rest, ergonomically designed to support supine position and fend off harsh reality. The corner seat can be included to produce a deeper seating surface.The sofa comes paired with a complimenting lounge chair which can also function as an independent piece, one especially suited for public contexts.
